Psychosocial support for AIDS orphans
As a result of the AIDS pandemic, more and more children in Africa are growing up without parents. Many have to fend for themselves from an early age. Through psychosocial support, they learn to cope with the loss of their parents. They regain their self-confidence and the courage that enables them to cope with life on their own. The Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development supports the Humuliza project in Tanzania, which provides comprehensive support to affected children.
No other continent is as deeply affected by the AIDS pandemic as Africa. Immunodeficiency disorder is the most common cause of death in adults aged between 15 and 59 years of age south of the Sahara. About 12 million children aged under 18 have lost their father, mother or both parents to AIDS. By 2010, the number will have risen to almost 16 million. This has far-reaching consequences for the countries concerned because the trauma doesn't just affect the children and their families. The whole population also suffers from the loss. Anyone who grows up without parents not only suffers emotional damage but is often also physically ill and poorly nourished. Left to fend for themselves, orphans often find themselves isolated and tormented. And they have no one to teach them practical skills and to provide social and moral guidance for them.
